Our School and Technology

Education I attended Catawba Valley Community College working in the Pre-liberal Arts program from 1988-1991.  Afterwards, I transferred to Lenoir-Rhyne College in Hickory, NC.  I graduated from Lenoir-Rhyne in August of 1993 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Elementary Education.  I earned my Master's degree in School Administration in May of 1999 from Appalachian State University in Boone, NC.  I am currently working on my Education Specialist degree at Appalachian State University.

Current Job I am the principal at Bethlehem Elementary School in Alexander County.  I am responsible for the management of the educational program and facility in this setting.  I am expected to be an instructional leader, determine how finances are distributed and spent at the school level, act as a liaison between the school, home, and community, hire and deal with personnel issues, evaluate the performance of staff members, effectively communicate with parents and the general public, etc.

Other Jobs I have served in a variety of roles in the educational arena.  I began my career as a full-time teacher assistant and bus driver, sixth grade teacher, curriculum specialist, assistant principal, and currently I am serving in the principal's role.

Passions I love to work in my yard, read, cook, entertain, spend time with my family and friends, and travel!

Must Reads I highly recommend that all educators read the following books:  Who Moved My Cheese? by Spenser Johnson, M.D. and The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People by Stephen Covey.  Johnson's book focuses on change and how people react to change.  He demonstrates a positive and negative reaction to change within a maze and the outcomes of these reactions.  Covey's book encourages reflection in ways that people spend their time working within organizations.  He also encourages taking a look at how individuals prioritize their professional and personal lives.

Quotes "Children have never been very good at listening to their elders, but they have never failed to imitate them."  James Baldwin

"If you are planning for a year; sow rice, if you are planning for a decade; plant trees, if you are planning for a lifetime; educate people."  Chinese Proverb
