Must Reads

(1)  Who Moved My Cheese? by Spencer Johnson, M.D. – Using a parable, the author helps the reader understand one’s reaction to change.  The goal is to reduce stress and find success, whether it is in our personal life, our professional life or the community around us.  It is applicable for any age group or work setting.

(2)  The Girls in the Back of the Class by LouAnne Johnson – This book is a continuation of the story the author began in MyPosse Don’t Do Homework (re-titled Dangerous Minds by the media).  It is a true story of her experiences in an inner-city school with high-risk students.  Not only does one learn how she handles various situations, but also how she feels about each one and what drives her to succeed.

(3)  Ender’s Shadow by Orson Scott Card.  The original book, Ender’s Game, introduces the reader to Ender who is chosen to be trained as part of an elite group that could save the planet against an enemy invasion.  The reader meets other children, as well, who comprise Ender’s team.  In Ender’s Shadow, the reader learns about Bean, who is one of the children on Ender’s team. Interestingly, both books stand alone in their story, but are written showing the same experience as interpreted by two different individuals from two different backgrounds.  Although it is science fiction, it gives much to consider about skills needed in any leadership role.

(4) “Sticks and Stones,” by Wessler, Stephen L.,  Educational Leadership, December/January 2001, p. 28-33. – This article emphasizes the power of words and the importance of adults modeling the correct behavior.  He shares several examples of students being harassed and the damage it causes.  All school staff must learn to intervene when hearing unacceptable words, correct the behavior and model a positive alternative.
