Current Job The school I currently work with is New Salem in Union County, North Carolina. I am the principal of New Salem Elementary.

My primary responsibilities are to communicate and carry out the mission statement of New Salem Elementary and the Union County Board of Education. As the principal I work directly with all staff members to ensure the State Standard Course of Study is being taught daily in an effective manner. I observe staff and make recommendations to the instructional program. I work directly with staff to meet ABC goals and objectives, and follow though with the school Improvement Plan. I communicate with parents about implementation of all school programs.

Other Jobs I served as the assistant principal at Forest Hills High School in Union County. I worked there four years. I also worked as a reading facilitator for the reading program, Success For All. (John Hopkins University Reading Program)

Passions I spend most of my time outside the professional world being the best mother I can be. I have a five-year-old and a nine-year-old. Believe me, they take most of my energy!!! I enjoy being actively involved in my church and missions work. I enjoy reading magazines and new ideas for best practices.

Social Causes - I got involved in helping to raise money for Relay for Life several years ago. We all know someone dear to us that has cancer or that has died from cancer. Since my first year being involved with Relay for Life, I find myself getting more and more involved. When you are compassionate about something you are doing, you don't realize the amount of time and energy you invest in the cause.

Must Reads 1.  Mosaic of Thought by Ellin Oliver Keene and Susan Zimmermann.
This book is about teaching reading comprehension in literature circles. Great book.

2.  Inspiring Active Learning by Merrill Harmin.

A must read book to help new teachers with some common sense strategies to use to help students become active, responsible learners

3.  Motivating and Inspiring Teachers by Todd Whitaker, Dale Lumpa.

Finding good teachers is half the battle. Keeping them is the other half. This book has some really good, practical ideas that you can do to help motivate your staff. It contains some suggestions that you can do as a principal to encourage your staff.

4.  First Person Plural by Carmeron West, Ph.D.

This is one of the books that was discussed on the Oprah book club. The author of this book wrote the book based on his own life as a person with multiple personalities. (Reads like a novel.)
