Current Job I am the principal at John Chavis Middle School in Cherryville, NC which is part of the Gaston County School system.

Other Jobs This is my second year as a school principal.  Prior to that I was assistant principal for three years at York Chester Middle School in Gastonia, NC.  The first 21 1/2 years of my career were devoted to directing band programs at the LSU Laboratory School in Baton Rouge, LA; North Stanly High School in New London, NC; Elkin High School in Elkin, NC; and Cherryville Junior-Senior High School in Cherryville, NC.  All of my employment opportunities have been extremely beneficial to me.   However, one in particular was a non-educational job.  I served as a warehouse manager for 18 months.   During that time I realized my calling to education and returned with a renewed spirit.

Passions My leisure time is spent in yard work around the house, photography, and church-related activities, especially choir.

Must Reads "Teenagers Preparing for the Real World" by Chad Foster.   This book is written for teenagers and would be good for inspirational reading.

I also enjoy reading novels by Stuart Woods and John Grisham.

Quotes "Do not compute the totality of your poultry population until all the manifestations of incubation have been entirely completed."     William Jennings Bryan

"My basic principle is that you don't make decisions because they are easy; you don't make them because they are cheap; you don't make them because they are popular; you make them because they are right."     Theodore Hesburgh

"I don't know the key to success, but the key to failure is trying to please everybody."     Bill Cosby

"To laugh often and much,
To win the respect of intelligent people and the affection of children,
To earn the appreciation of honest critics and endure the betrayal of false friends,
 To appreciate beauty,
To find the best in others,
To leave the world a little better, whether by a healthy child, a garden patch, or
    a redeemed social condition,
To know that even one life has breathed easier because you have lived,
This is to have succeeded."      Ralph Waldo Emerson
